High School students in Rachel Gaskill’s dance classes recently
participated in an Irish Dance class taught by John Corry, a member
of the South Jersey Irish American Cultural Society. The classes
were held in the school’s dance studio.
“We
had been studying traditional folk dances from around the world,” explained
Gaskill. “Mr. Corry demonstrated and taught The Seige of
Ennis and shared his knowledge of traditional dances in Ireland.”
Corry,
of Egg Harbor Township, came to the United States in 1988 from
Tulla, County Clare Ireland. He played bagpipes as a member of
the Tulla Pipers band for over 25 years and won prizes for his
dancing in Ireland.
Those
who participated were excited about the opportunity to learn about
Irish dancing. “It was a very fun and different experience,” commented
Chrissy Mazzeo, sophomore.
“This
was a wonderful opportunity for the dance students to experience
authentic Irish dance first hand from a very passionate teacher,” said
Gaskill. “We look forward to having him visit our class again.”
