For
twelve years, Walt Disneyworld has been hosting a National Cross-Country
Invitational for high school and college level runners. This year
the Oakcrest High School Girls’ Cross Country team, led by
Coach Kim Nath was invited to participate in this prestigious 5K
race, which is approximately a 3.1 mile long race. These girls
trained extensively for many weeks to travel to the Wide World
of Sports Competition in Orlando, Florida.
Ten
runners and two coaches, Nath and Samantha Connor, attended and
participated in this race. All of the athletes did their best and
experienced a very exciting competition. “This was my second
year going. The coaches and the rest of the team emphasized how
important it was to run as a team. Cross-Country is all mental,
and with a great atmosphere in Florida, everyone got along and
had a blast,” stated Alison Jones, junior at Oakcrest.
This
National Competition is a huge race that most of the cross-country
runners may never have gotten to compete in if they weren’t
given this chance. “The experience was worth it, and the
girls got to see how a National Competition is held,” commented
Nath. “The girls, including myself, had a blast. All of the
girls’ said it was a bonding experience.”
Overall,
the team had a great experience with this opportunity to compete
nationally against hundreds of other schools.
The
ten runners from Oakcrest who attended the race were: Shana Bershler,
Amanda Liepe, Kelly Neyers, Kelly Nuygen, Brynne Kessler, Krystina
Bennet, Camila Guiterriez, Maura Miller, Emily Capelli and Jones.
