Recently,
Caitlin Kaspar, senior, and Kelsey Cheek, freshman, of the Oakcrest
High School Diving Team attended the New Jersey States Diving Competition.
The competition was held after school at The College of New Jersey’s
pool. The girls are coached by Kristine Demark, Science Teacher
and former diver for LaSalle University.
In
order to qualify for this event, the divers had to score at least
160 points in any given meet during the season. However, in order
to attend this competition, the divers must have eleven dives that
add up and meet a certain difficulty level since each dive is given
a Degree of Difficulty.
This
was both of the divers first time to attend states, while Kaspar
stated, “I (she) was really proud to be there. I didn’t
think the girls would be as good as they were, but it was exciting
just to compete against them.”
Attending
States meant that their season was a month longer than it would
have been, and practices were longer time wise, with fewer divers,
meaning more practicing. However, all this extra practice came
in handy! Demark commented about the competition that, “The
girls did great at the State meet. Kelsey placed Twenty-ninth while
Caitlin placed Twentieth, respectively. I am proud of them both.
The competition was top notch and some of the best diving I have
ever seen! They should be very pleased with themselves.”
Competing
against the best divers in the State is no easy task, but Kaspar
and Cheek made the best of their season and went out with a bang!
Since Kaspar is a senior and was a great asset to the Oakcrest
Swim Team, she will be greatly missed next year; however, Cheek
has just begun one of four great years—so plan on hearing
more great news about her in years to come! Good job girls and
good luck next year!
