The
Art History Institute, one of the several Small Learning Communities
new at Oakcrest High School this year, recently took a field trip
to Ocean City. Led by Art History English Teacher, Jaclyn Fresne,
the class visited Oakcrest Math Teacher, Gayle Bryce’s, art
studio, Glazed Over.
The
students first learned about the history of Mosaic art and then
prepared to create their own original mosaic art by scaling up
images of a Matisse collage on an 8-by-10 piece of wood. While
at Glazed Over, they tiled and grouted their mosaics. Back at Oakcrest,
the students assembled each of their individual pieces to form
the Matisse collage in their classroom.
A
mosaic is a technique of art that creates a picture or decoration
by using tiles or pottery fragments. These students were given
the chance to create their own individual mosaic. “Making
the mosaics was a unique experience that we could only have gotten
through the Art History Institute,” Senior Alissa Leeds commented
about the trip.
The
Art History Institute consists of 18 high school seniors at Oakcrest
who are interested in studying art and the history of the art.
This small learning community allows students to work hands-on,
and is a great course for anyone interested in art history as a
desired profession.
Overall,
the field trip was a great success and helped the seniors learn
hands-on artwork. “It was rewarding to see students create
original artwork in a professional setting and work both individually
and collaboratively to produce beautiful artwork,” said Fresne.
The
students that are in the Art History Institute are seniors: Dominique
Avery, Danielle Beavers, Katie Byrnes, Kevin Cox, Jessica Falvo,
Emilee Gagnon, Billy Gatto, Kathryn Houser, Alissa Leeds, Johnathan
Shute, Lomar Stevens, John Troutner, Tegan Vaughn, Natalia Vieyra,
Breana Whittaker, Brittany Yachere, Victoria Pilalis, and Matt
Frick.
