“NEW” GREENHOUSE AT OAKCREST Recently, John Gazo’s transitional math class and Mike Czapczynski’s biology class at Oakcrest High School began using the already existing greenhouse in the 300 wing to test what medium yields the best plants. The greenhouse hadn’t been used in several years. The structure is heated, and 90% of the plants have grown successfully so far, according to Gazo. Students are still waiting for their results on the hypothesis. The class, using coffee filters and the metric system, measured different mediums to determine which one absorbed the most amount of water. Gazo thought the idea of the greenhouse was a great idea to show students another way to learn about planting and the metric system. “I am glad that the greenhouse is finally getting used again for educational purposes,” Gazo said. Gazo also noted that he is encouraging students and teachers to donate plants to the greenhouse to improve its condition. “All together I think the greenhouse cohort is an excellent project because it incorporates planting and the metric system,” he added.
