Summer Assignment
English II Honors/ US History I Honors Political Science Institute

Introduction

Welcome to the Honors Political Science Institute!  I would like to impress upon you how important it is to challenge yourself academically.  You have made a very admirable decision by choosing to take an Honors level cohort.  As you can imagine, this opportunity will also require a significant amount of hard work and dedication on your part.  As consistent with the Honors and AP programs, you will be asked to complete summer work.  This summer work will prepare you to actively participate and prepare for the upcoming school year.  If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to email at ABryan@geh.nj.k12us.com.

A text can be purchased at any book store (if you want your own copy to mark up) or from guidance.
Texts
The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne (e-text available)
Supplemental Materials
A Contemporary Student’s Guide to Puritanism (PowerPoint)
Nathaniel Hawthorne (PowerPoint)
Study Guide (depending on when you complete the reading assignment, it may be useful for refreshing your memory for class discussions).
Journal Topics (25 points each)
The four (4) journal responses  should be typed.  If you are sending them electronically, I am only able to open Microsoft Word documents (.doc or .docx), so please do not email Works or Word Perfect files.  Please be thorough with these journal assignments.  The content of your responses will be used again in class. They will be graded for development/depth, voice, writing mechanics, responsiveness to prompt, and clarity.
Reading Logs (20 points per chapter range)
Reading logs should be typed on the Microsoft word table provided.  As they are “live documents,” the “grids” will expand as necessary. For each range of three (3) chapters, complete five (5) reading logs.  These will be used in class discussion as well as for writing an essay.  These may be submitted electronically (to my e-mail) or in hard form (in print).
