The Immigration Project
An Introduction to Immigration
The United States of America has been called a “crucible” and a “melting pot” since the 17th and 18th century and conferred with its beloved title “the melting pot” in 1908. Unlike European countries, with long, predictable lineages and common
heritage, American stands out as a heterogeneous mixture of various
races and cultures. The melting pot represents the idea of different
cultures and races mixing together to form a distinct common culture
composed of elements from unique culture. Although some may argue
as to the success of the melting pot, no one can deny the amazing
blending that has taken place in America and how radically is separates
America from other countries. Immigration from the 1600s until
today has made the United States a land of unique opportunities
and unique hardships. In April 2009, Oakcrest High School will
celebrate this process and analyze its dilemmas, learning to appreciate
America’s unique culture and colorful past. |
