ACADEMIC RECOGNITION: Policy #5440

The Board of Education values excellence and wished to inculcate in students the desire to do their best in all things. It shall be the policy of the board, therefore, to recognize outstanding academic achievement through an honor roll system, the recognition of varsity scholars and the recognition of a valedictorian and a salutatorian in each graduating class.

Honor Rolls will be published at the close of each marking period and at the end of the year. The following criteria will be used:

High Honor Roll: Students earning an average of 92 or above are so honored. As of the school year 1999-2000, students with a 92 average and above with no grade lower than a 77 would be listed on the honor roll.

Merit Roll: Students earning an average of 85 to 91.99 are so honored. As of the 1999-2000 school year, students with an average of 85 to 91.99 averages with no grade lower than a 77 would be listed on the merit roll.

Any pupil who earns a cumulative average of 88 or above at the end of each year, will be named a varsity scholar. The first year a pupil earns the honor, he or she will receive a certificate and a varsity letter bearing the lamp of learning; a pupil will be rewarded a certificate each succeeding year he or she attains this average. The purposes of this award are to encourage scholastic achievement, to honor pupils who achieved high grades but not selected for the National Honor Society, and to focus the attention of pupils, parents, and the community on educational achievement as the primary goal of the school.

The Valedictorian and Salutatorian of each high school will be the pupils who are ranked one and two at the end of their senior year based upon the weighted class rank. In order to be eligible, pupils must have been enrolled in the high school in the District by September 1 of the pupil’s senior year.
