GRADING SYSTEM: Policy #2624

A. Grading

The grades earned by pupils in the Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District result from the act of making professional judgments based upon data gathered in the instructional process. Pupil grades are to be solely the result of professional judgment of the teacher as to the degree to which a pupil has or has not met the requirements of the course of study.

That judgment is to be based on the data collected by the teacher in the execution of the course of study. Once the teacher’s judgment is made, it is to be reported according to the established grading structure, which ranges from a low numerical grade of 50 to a maximum grade of 100. If it is necessary to convert the numerical grades to letter grades or vice versa, the conversion chart shown on the back of the report card is to be used. That conversion is a follows.

A+ 100-96 A 95-93
A- 91-92
B+ 90-89 B 88-86
B- 85-84
C+ 83-82 C 81-79

D+ 76-75 D 74-72

This listing is for conversion purposes only. The district does not use an alph-based grading system. The grading system is numeric and all grades are reported in a numeric format. The conversion is for convenience in reference only.

The concept of the “E” grade has been maintained largely for archival purposes. An “E” grade is to be used for withholding credit for a course from a student who refuses to participate in classroom activities that are an integral part of a course of study. A warning letter must be issued by the teacher through his/her supervisor to the parent/guardian at the time the student refuses to participate. A copy of the letter will be sent to the pupil’s guidance counselor and kept in the pupil’s file. The credit failure will not take effect until the end of the academic year and the pupil will be given the opportunity to remediate the grade by completing the work through the close of the academic year.

The grading system includes a mid-term and final examination, which will be reported as a separate grade.
