PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Teacher Job Description

Function: The teacher shall work within the scope of his/her certification and limitations of the school district, toward the educational goals adopted, and shall instruct assigned students in accordance with the course of study(ies) approved by the Board of Education.

E. Maintains appropriate teacher-student relationship 

Supervised by: Certified Supervisor/Principal

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board of Education policies on evaluation of tenure and non-tenure professional personnel and pertinent laws and sections of the working agreement.

Qualifications: As determined by State Certification requirements.


TEACHER

Job Task A: Prepares for instruction
1. Prepares lesson plans consistent with the objectives and content in the course of study
a. Consults the course of study and course proficiencies
b. Organizes objectives, content, and activities for developmental sequence and experience
c. Builds upon previous lessons
d. Plan book meets departmental standard

2. Materials and equipment needed for instruction are present
a. Relevant materials for instruction are prepared or secured in advance
b. Previews materials
c. Equipment is ready for use in the classroom.

3. Prepares lessons that are appropriate for the ability and needs of pupils
a. Plans provide for individualized, group, and full class instruction as necessary
b. Subject matter is selected relative to pupil's ability
c. Considers the results of evaluation of student progress when planning lessons

4. Maintains a satisfactory classroom environment to the extent that it is under the control of the teacher
a. Bulletin boards are timely, instructional and motivational
b. Light and ventilation are appropriate
c. Classroom organization facilitates the operation of the class (i.e. arrangement of furniture, screen, materials, storage, etc.)

Job Task B: Carries out instruction
1. Introduces lessons with appropriate review and/or preview
a. Vocabulary related to lessons is introduced
b. Work relates to previous lessons and homework assignments
c. Class starts on time

2. Organizes class control and structured activity to maximize student learning
a. The student teacher exercises control in the class
b. Classroom rules and procedures have been established
c. Routine tasks, such as attendance, checking homework, etc., are done efficiently

3. Methods of presentation are appropriate to accomplish the objectives of lessons
a. A variety of approaches: lecture, audio visual, discussion, work sheets, etc., are used and are appropriate for the material covered
b. There is a balance between teacher-centered and student-centered activities.
c. There is a logical progression to the lesson.
d. Demonstrates enthusiasm for teaching and subject matter

4. Uses questioning techniques that elicit multiple levels of thinking skills
a. Use of how, why, if, what, when, compare, etc., questions
b. Attempts to involve all pupils in class discussions and activities
c. Written work is designed to develop student thinking process

5. Demonstrates mastery of subject matter
a. Information presented is factually accurate and current.
b. Student initiated questions are adequately answered.
c. Takes advantage of "teachable moment" to introduce additional information when appropriate

6. Structures lessons that reflect pacing, timing, and constructive pupil involvement
a. In-class assignments are completed on time
b. Pupils are actively involved in the lesson by asking and answering questions, listening, writing, etc.

7. Concludes lessons effectively
a. The lesson is accurately summarized.
b. Homework, long and short range, is assigned as appropriate.
c. Assignments that grow out of a lesson are developed as follow-up activities.
d. The teacher dismisses the class in an orderly fashion.

Job Task C: Reviews the effectiveness of instruction
1. Provides additional time and assistance for pupils
a. Information and materials are provided to the tutors of pupils who are receiving home instruction.
b. Teacher is available to pupils for counseling, make-up, extra help and/or detention during the activity period.

2. Prepares effective plans and directions for substitute teacher
a. Materials and plans are available for the substitute.
b. An accurate seating chart is available.
c. Pupil leaders have been trained to assist the substitute.
d. Emergency lesson plans are on file.

3. Maintains accurate records of pupil progress.
a. Class record book is maintained accurately with appropriate notations.
b. Pupil attendance, grades, and other information are recorded in a timely manner.

4. Uses assessment data to provide pupils with feedback which is corrective and informative.
a. Tests, quizzes, homework, projects, essays, etc. are graded promptly, recorded, and reviewed by pupils.
b. A variety of methods are used to evaluate individual and class progress and mastery of content.
c. Evaluation is carried out in objective manner.
d. Review and re-teaching are used as indicated by the results of evaluation
e. Constructive comments and directions are made to pupils on corrected papers.

Job Task D: Meets professional responsibilities
1. Communicates effectively with pupils, parents, co-workers, supervisor, etc.
a. Confidential information is respected.
b. Proper channels are utilized.
c. Parents are kept informed of pupil progress and problems through report cards, interim progress reports, notes, conferences, etc.
d. Teacher shares information about pupils with school personnel such as counselors, vice-principals, supervisors, etc. when appropriate.
e. Maintains positive professional interaction with all school personnel.

2. Implements his/her professional improvement plan
a. Meets timelines

3. Assumes and carries out all assignments punctually and dependably
a. Assigned administrative duty

Job Task E: Maintains appropriate teacher-student relationship
1. Maintains an atmosphere of mutual respect in relationships with pupils

c. Uses techniques and skills to develop and promote courtesy among pupils
d. Conducts classes without continually resorting to reprimand
e. Requires pupils to treat and address him/her with respectful

2. Uses classroom procedures which encourage and develop pupil self discipline and self confidence
a. Provides opportunities for pupils to develop qualities of leadership and self direction
b. Encourages pupil participation in decisions which affect them when appropriate
c. Provides for reinforcement of positive student performance and behavior

3. Provides fair, firm, and consistent discipline
a. Maintains reasonable classroom standards of pupil behavior consistent with district standards
b. Deals objectively with student behavior problems to minimize their effectively effect on individual pupil and class learning
c. Uses available school resources (supervisor, counselor, AST members, administrators, etc.) and procedures including teacher assigned detention to deal with pupil problems in an appropriate manner

4. Supervises behavior and conditions in the building and on school grounds for the safety and well-being of students, staff, and visitors
a. Is observant about activities taking place as he/she moves through the building and takes corrective action if necessary
b. Reports student misbehavior to the appropriate vice-principal
c. Reports situations or conditions which may be unsafe to the principal
