TUTORING: Policy #5432

In order to be tutored to make up a subject which a student has failed or to obtain credit for a new course, the following regulations must be followed:

1. The student must submit an application on the proper form to the Principal for approval before tutoring commences.

2. In order to receive credit, the student must be tutored the prescribed number of hours:                                     

  Make Up: 5 Credits - 20 hours New Credit: 5 Credits - 40 hours
 
    2.5 Credits - 10 hours     
 2.5 Credits - 20 hours  

3. A student may be tutored only two hours per week during the school year and four hours per week during the summer or vacation periods. In addition to the hours with the tutor, a student will be required to do additional reading, study, reports, and written work assigned by the tutor. This work must be submitted to the Principal with the certification by the tutor of completion of the required hours of tutorial instruction.

4. Students must pass the proficiency examination for the course during the summer. The departmental of proficiency examination will be given by the supervisor of the department on the first duty day in September for supervisors and will be corrected by the teacher or supervisor of the department during the first week of school. During the year, the examination will be scheduled by the supervisor of the department.

5. The tutor will be given a copy of the course proficiencies, textbooks, and other appropriate materials upon request. These will be returned by the student on the day he/she takes the examination.

6. The tutor must be certified by the State of NJ to teach the subject. A copy of the tutor’s NJ Teaching Certificate must be attached to the application (for out-of-district tutors).

7. All costs for tutoring shall be the responsibility of the student and his/her parents.

8. The maximum number of credits a student may attempt through tutoring:
A. During a semester - 5 Credits
B. Summer - 10 Credits
C. The Superintendent may recommend exceptions to the Board of Education.
