UNATTENDED WORKSTATIONS

Rationale:  The networks installed in each of our high schools maintain data critical to the mission of the GEHRHSD. This mission critical data is comprised of information regarding the status, progress and history of our students. Much of this information is confidential and all of it is vital both to our clients, the students and community, and to the operation of the school district. It is the goal of the mission of the Information Management staff to guarantee the accuracy, quality, accessibility, integrity and confidentiality of this data. We must take all prudent measures to insure that this data is not misused. More importantly, we must protect this data from exposure to corruption or tampering in any way. This is especially the case where workstations are located in areas essentially unsecured and largely unsupervised.

Procedure:  As our network grows, it will become increasingly necessary to install workstations in less secure areas of our buildings. Since these locations will not be supervised at all times, it is essential that security measures be implemented to protect the integrity of our student database. These locations include places where there is no secretary or staff actually assigned to using the workstation on a regular basis or where the workstation is unattended for much of the time. The following procedures will be adopted, effective immediately, for these locations:

1. In order to assure that no virus problems are encountered, the local floppy drive(s) of these workstations will be disabled.
2. In order to assure the integrity of our system and an ethical respect for copyright laws, no unlicensed of "pirated" software may be loaded onto any local hard drive. All programs for these workstations must be purchased by the school district and individually approved by the Supervisor of Data Management.
3. Unless approved by the Supervisor of Data Management, no applications other than those available on the network will be permitted to be operated on these workstations.
4. No student may use any networked workstation at any time
