Hi everyone, welcome to U.S. History II!
I’m Mr. Matlock, and I’ll be your History teacher for the 25/26 school year. If you ever need to reach me, my email is jmatlock@gehrhsd.net.
I’m also around for extra help during zero period on A and B days in Room 316.
Here’s how grading works in my class. I use a total points system, which means everything you do—tests, quizzes, projects, and assignments—adds up to your final grade. Assessments like tests, big projects, and essays count for 50%. Assignments like classwork, smaller projects, and participation are 40%, and then you’ll have a 10% progress assessment at the end of each trimester. The more effort and quality work you put in, the more points you earn.
All work is turned in on Google Classroom by the deadline posted there. If you’re absent, it’s your responsibility to check Classroom for what you missed. Late work loses 20% within the first three days and 40% after that. I’ll make exceptions when it makes sense—like if you have an IEP/504 plan or something comes up—but you’ve got to communicate with me.
For tests, you’ll always get at least a week’s notice. Quizzes may happen when I decide they’re needed. If you miss a test or quiz because you’re absent, you’ll take it the very next day you’re back in class.
My classroom rules are pretty simple: show up on time, respect the room, respect each other, and most importantly—get after it every day. If you’re late four times, I’ll have to call home or write a referral, so just get here on time.
Technology is a daily tool in here, so bring your Chromebook or laptop every day. Phones stay put away unless I tell you otherwise—our red light/green light poster will make it clear. Phones are fine during passing time and lunch, but in class they are not for taking pictures, calling, or recording. If you end up in ISS or detention, your phone will be locked up until you’re done.
AI is something we’ll use in smart ways, but there are limits. It’s great for brainstorming ideas, checking facts, or getting extra explanations when something’s confusing. But it cannot do your work for you—no essays, no homework answers, no test or quiz help, and no copy-pasting. That’s plagiarism, and it won’t fly. If you misuse AI or your phone, there will be consequences per district policy.
At the end of the day, I want you to succeed. I’ll push you to work hard, but I’ll also be here to support you the whole way. If you put in the effort, I promise you’ll get a lot out of this class.
