Jason Thompson is an 8 year NBA vet with the Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors and Toronto Raptors was at Oakcrest Thursday evening, helping out our boys basketball coach Kamron Warner. Kam and Jason played at Rider together and remained best of friends to this day.

Good evening - We are aware of some individuals taking to social media and disputing the statement that we put out yesterday, claiming that they have different information and that there was in fact a gun on our school bus. 1. We will clearly state again, neither the district, nor any of the law enforcement involved were advised there was a gun, or at any time saw, found, or recovered any gun. 2. The student that made the initial report did not report seeing a gun. 3. If anyone claims to have different information, please contact either Mike McGhee (Oakcrest Principal) or James Reina (Superintendent) at the district or local law enforcement, so we can further investigate. Social Media is not the place to "share" vital information; the school administration or law enforcement would be. 4. Spreading misinformation or rumors is not only unproductive, it creates unnecessary alarm and hinders the ability to return to normal operations at our schools. With all that has occurred recently in this country in regards to school violence and other mass casualty events, the Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District welcomes any and all information that would help further provide for the health, safety, and welfare of our students. With that said, we will vigorously respond to claims that we know to be false or inaccurate to avoid further public alarm and the spreading of misinformation. Thank you.
Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,
We are writing to inform you of a school security event that took place this afternoon off campus, at a school sponsored event. Our Oakcrest Senior students were attending “Lake Day” at the Egg Harbor City Lake. At the conclusion of the day, as students were boarding the school buses to return to Oakcrest, two students reported to our School Resource Officer that while another student was boarding the bus a magazine for a handgun and bullets had fallen out of the student's bookbag. The bus was held at the lake while our School Resource Officer used the information provided to identify and remove the student. Our School Resource Officer secured the student and his belongings, and then worked with local law enforcement. While I cannot share any personally identifiable information, please know that local law enforcement is involved and guiding the process, and the District takes this situation very seriously.
To be clear, there was a magazine with bullets found, but no firearm. We recognize the magnitude of an event such as this, and want to again stress the importance of our staff, students, and families sharing information when there is concern. We have no reason at this time to believe there is any additional danger to any of our staff or students. As always we take the health, safety, and welfare of our students and staff as our priority.
